This Morning's Holly Willoughby issues statement and takes early break as Phillip Schofield quits

Phillip Schofield has quit This Morning amid ongoing rumours of a feud between himself and Holly Willoughby. ITV bosses have confirmed Phil's last show after more than 20 years on the popular daytime programme was on Thursday, May 18.

Meanwhile, ITV has confirmed that Holly Willoughby will remain on This Morning and will co-present with "members of the This Morning family". The breaking news comes following rumours Phil and Holly's friendship was hanging in the balance with reports claiming they were "barely speaking" off camera.

Phil has been a presenter on the This Morning sofa since 2002 when he replaced John Leslie, he hosted with Fern Britton until 2009 when Holly took over the reigns on September 14. As well as presenting This Morning together for almost 14 years, Phil and Holly also present Dancing On Ice together.

Following the news, Holly released a statement that read: "It's been over 13 great years presenting This Morning with Phil and I want to take this opportunity to thank him for all of his knowledge, his experience and his humour. The sofa won’t feel the same without him."

Holly also shared the statement with her 8.3 million Instagram followers, finishing it off with a pink love heart. While Phil has already presented his last show, Holly will return on Monday, June 5, with ITV confirming she will be taking an early half-term holiday starting Monday, May 22.

In a statement released on Saturday, May 20, Phil said: "I have always been proud to cover fascinating stories on This Morning. But recently, This Morning itself has become the story. Throughout my career in TV – including the very difficult last few days – I have always done my best to be honourable and kind. I understand that ITV has decided the current situation can’t go on, and I want to do what I can to protect the show that I love.

"So I have agreed to step down from This Morning with immediate effect, in the hope that the show can move forward to a bright future. I’d like to thank everyone who has supported me – especially This Morning’s amazing viewers – and I’ll see you all for the Soap Awards next month."
