This Morning's Holly and Phil devastated after opening Blue Peter time capsule

Blue Peter fans of the 1980s will be sorely disappointed to hear of the fate of a time capsule created in 1981.

That's how This Morning's Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby felt today when they cracked open a Blue Peter time capsule which was packed up 41 years ago.

The excited duo were looking forward to seeing what was inside as they got the capsule open with legendary BBC presenter Sarah Greene on today's episode.

But they were all left gutted when they saw what was lying inside.

They had expected to find tapes of the Blue Peter theme tune, as well as clips from the BBC show and even a script from that very day on Blue Peter. But instead they were met with a mess of brown mess.

"I feel like a spider's going to come out of there," one of them said, as they all leaned in to look what they found. The studio descended into laughter as the camera panned to what was inside the box.

Holly held her hand over her nose and mouth because of the smell, whilst Phil surveyed the box.

"Well look at that," he said, showing the camera the box as Holly quizzed whether one of the Blue Peter dogs had put something into the box before it was closed over four decades ago.

Later on in the ITV show, it was explained what had happened to the box.

The metal lining inside had corroded and attacked everything that was contained in it, but they did manage to rescue some crisp wrappers and sweet wrappers of the day and there was also a disc of a recording of the original theme tune for Blue Peter - but it is unlikely to be playable.

Viewers at home were disappointed to see the contents - or lack of - in the box.

"Oh I’m gutted the time capsules not survived @thismorning @RealSarahGreene #ThisMorning," one wrote, as another fan of the BBC show, who watched it being buried, added: "Crikey, this makes me feel old. I remember watching when they buried that time capsule. I bet they thought it would be there longer than 41 years! #ThisMorning."

A third shared: "I remember the time capsule being buried in the Blue Peter garden - feels a bit sad @thismorning are opening it already. #ThisMorning," whilst a fourth penned: "What a waste of 40 years , try plastic or glass casing next time."
