This Morning's Dermot O'Leary posts emotional tribute to The Queen as show cancelled

This Morning's Dermot O'Leary has paid a heartfelt tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, after the show was cancelled on Friday in the aftermath of her death.

News was delivered to the nation just after 6.30pm on Thursday that Queen Elizabeth II had died at Balmoral a few hours earlier, at the age of 96, as several senior members of the Royal Family headed to Scotland to be with her. Buckingham Palace announced the death of Her Majesty in a statement which read: 'The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral and return to London in the morning."

After being widely criticised earlier in the day for not scrapping programmes to focus on the news surrounding The Queen's health, ITV swiftly altered its schedule, to allow coverage of The Queen's death to go into the night.

The broadcaster also confirmed significant changes to its schedule for Friday. Good Morning Britain aired as normal from 6-9am, but that was the only bit of normal routine to the day's programming, with Lorraine, This Morning and Loose Women all pulled.

Dermot was due to host This Morning alongside Alison Hammond and took to Instagram to share his own tribute to Her Majesty. Sharing a beautiful picture of Queen Elizabeth done by his artist friend Matt Mackman, Dermot wrote: "Duty and decency. Rest in peace."

Many of Dermot's followers were quick to react, with one replying: "Beautiful painting on a very sombre day." A second commented: "Lovely tribute. I was crying all night… such a sad thing, to lose our wonderful queen. RIP with your soul mate your majesty."

Alison also posted a picture on The Queen on her Instagram grid, writing next to it: "RIP Your Majesty."
