This Morning's Alison Hammond comforted as she breaks down over weight struggles

Alison Hammond was comforted by her This Morning co-stars as she broke down live on air today.

The presenter was particularly moved by a phone-in segment, where a woman had called in to admit she was worried about her teenage daughter as she didn't know how to help her with her eating disorder.

Alison - who has been open about her own battle with her weight - said she was very touched by the young woman's story, as she tried to hold in her tears.

Speaking about the segment, Alison said: "Can I just say something? Obviously I've had - I'm getting upset - I've had obesity my whole life. And what it is, is your regulation system is out of whack. So obviously, you can't control wanting to eat all the time."

"And I think what a lot of people don't realise, is obesity is a disease. You can't help wanting to eat all the time," she added as she broke down in tears. She was comforted by Dermot and Deirdre as she added: "Sorry, I get - sorry.

"Because I think people look down at people just because they're so big and they can't actually help it if they've got a disease. When you're in it, it's difficult. You want to eat and you want all the bad things and you know you don't look right. Sorry, it touched me."

Deirdre then asked Alison what she would say to the teenager if she could.

"She needs help, I think. NHS needs to see it as a disease. People help people who are anorexic but they don't help people who are overweight and that's why so many people turn to surgery and that, we don't know what to do. It's really affected me," she said.

Dermot then turned to her to offer her his support. "Do you know what Al? Just you opening up like that, maybe that's helped her," he said, as Alison admitted: "It's so hard, people don't realise."

Fans rushed to social media to praise Alison for being so open about how she felt.

"More genuine feeling from Alison in 30 seconds than from certain other people in 30 years. X #ThisMorning," one wrote, as a second added online: " #ThisMorning Alison you are beautiful inside and out. You are adored by so many x you touch the hearts of many x."

A third shared: " #ThisMorning Alison what an inspiration you are. Never apologise for telling the truth and taking about a condition that is just hidden. Your right people look and call you lazy, yet medical issues raise body weight."

"Alison honey.. the struggle is real every single day. Can't tell you how much many of us relate to your situation #ThisMorning," a fourth penned as they offered their support through on social media.
