This Morning pet expert issues warning to dog owners

Vet Dr Scott Miller urged This Morning viewers to keep their dogs protected from the sun in the run up to summer.

Joining Alison Hammond and Craig Doyle on today's show, This Morning vet Dr Scott Miller issued a vital message to dog owners. With summer just around the corner, he pleaded with viewers to be aware of the potential long lasting damage their pets are susceptible to.

In the run up to summer, Scott asked dog owners to keep their pets protected from damaging UV rays. With the amount of time dogs spend on their back or side, he noted there was potential for long-lasting damage from the sun if proper precautions were not taken.

Accompanied by an adorable dog, he said: "In the sunshine, she lays out on her back and that's where she can get burnt on her tummy but also on her nose and on her ears. White breeds or any dogs that may have hairless patches, sectional terriers for example, so they have skin exposed to the sun so of course they can get exposed to the sun."

Alison followed up by asking if black or darker dogs have more of an immunity to the sun which Scott confirmed. He added: "They have a little bit more pigment in their skin which is natural protection but are still susceptible to danger."

He went on to say human sunscreen was acceptable but could be dangerous if digested so a specific dog formula was recommended. The added the best application method would be to apply the lotion during feeding time or when taking your pet for a walk as to distract them.
