A woman who was given an "unwanted" Brazilian butt lift surgery warns people against travelling abroad for cosmetic surgeries after her horrific ordeal. Michelle Heath, 41, joined Josie Gibson and Craig Doyle on Tuesday's instalment of This Morning as she detailed her botched surgical procedure in Turkey.
After losing 10 stone in her early 20s, Michelle was left with excess saggy skin that she wanted to have removed so began researching surgeons abroad. She had previously been given a breast lift and tummy tuck on the NHS, aged 24, after being diagnosed with conical breast syndrome.
Michelle researched potential surgeries and surgeons in Turkey before eventually booking in with an accredited doctor but was soon left in excruciating pain after going under the knife.
"I hadn’t heard any scare stories but if I had, I probably would have opened my eyes a bit more," she said on This Morning. "The red flags happened when I got out of theatre and I had someone come into my room and demand I pay more money for medication, despite the fact I’d already paid for antibiotics."
Despite paying for two nights in the hospital accommodation, Michelle was forced to wait for hours in the reception area in agony and unable to understand why she couldn't sit down. "At this point I didn't know they had done the BBL on me," she said as Josie exclaimed: "You didn't know?!"
Explaining to host Craig what the procedure involves, she continued: "A BBL is when a [surgeon] takes fat from part of your body and inject it into your bum and it's the most dangerous cosmetic procedure because it can go straight into veins and cause an embolism in your heart."
"I didn't ask for [the BBL], I didn't find out that had happened to me until the third day. I didn't know why I couldn't sit down," she explained. She had travelled to Turkey to undergo surgeries to remove the skin on her legs and also do a back lift, but three days later it emerged she had also been given the unwanted bum op.
Michelle was forced to wait in the hospital's reception for five hours for her transfer and couldn't understand why she was unable to sit down. After trying to speak to medical professionals, Michelle was told by nurses she would have to pay more money for extra medical treatment despite the agonising pain.
When she arrived back home in Belfast, a family friend advised her to go straight to A&E after noticing Michelle smelt of "rotting flesh". "I'm glad I woke up with all my kidneys," she joked.
It soon became clear how badly the procedure had gone as Michelle was unable to sit down or even go to the toilet, and doctors noticed her legs had been left with blood clots after the liposuction.
Michelle received treatment for the infection but suffered another setback when the wound in her back burst open. Following more surgery and a skin-graft Michelle received the all clear from doctors in Ireland.
