This Morning fans 'cringe' at Rishi Sunak interview as he fangirls over Andi Peters

This Morning fans were not entirely impressed as Conservative MP Rishi Sunak was interviewed on the show by Andi Peters and Rochelle Humes on Thursday.

The former Chancellor of the Exchequer is in the running to be the next prime minister of the UK following Boris Johnson standing down in July.

Rishi is in the leadership race alongside Liz Truss, and he appeared on This Morning on Thursday morning to discuss his hopes for becoming the party leader, and the prime minister.

But the interview technique of the hosts didn't impress fans, as amongst discussing current issues including the cost of living crisis, and rising inflation, the pair asked Rishi about whether he liked fish and chips.

After he was pictured in McDonald's this week, the pair went on to ask him what his favourite meal was in the fast food franchise.

As the interview went on, fans shared their annoyance on Twitter - as others reacted to Rishi fangirling over presenter Andi, claiming he grew up with him on the TV.

One viewer said: "Rochelle and Andy were the completely wrong presenters to be interviewing Rishi Sunak."

Another agreed: "This is cringe!!!" as a third wrote: "Rochelle and Andi interviewing Rishi Sunak is like Peppa Pig interviewing Albert Einstein."

A fourth fan said: "Rishi we don’t care how much you love Andi what are you gunna do about this s**t show of a country."

It comes hours after reports suggested Truss would be the next prime minister, according to a survey run on the ConservativeHome website.

The poll showed the Foreign Secretary is ahead of Rishi by 32 points.

Of the 961 Tory members polled, 60% said they wanted Ms Truss to succeed Boris Johnson, and a pitiful 28% backed Mr Sunak.

It is the latest poll to put Ms Truss widely ahead of Rishi Sunak who has been dubbing himself the ‘underdog’, in an apparent bid to lower expectations.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV and ITV Hub.
