This Morning fans baffled over Holly and Phillip's confession amid first hug in 2 years

This Morning viewers were left left perplexed over Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield's confession as they hugged for the first time in two years on TV.

Due to government guidelines during the coronavirus pandemic, the hosts have had to stay a certain length apart (at one point, two metres) and were unable to touch.

But following the relaxing of the rules last week, Holly and Phil took joy in standing so close to one another.

Announcing that the next segment was Toff's holiday to Mexico, Phil spoke about the changes made to Dancing On Ice, which they hosted last night.

He said: "The screens came down on Dancing On Ice and we're the closest we've been!"

Holly leaned in and the pair hugged, leading her to exclaim: "Look at that! On the telly! We've had a few cuddles off set..."

"We might have done," Phil grinned.

"We have," she said. "But this is the first time on screen that we're allowed, so that feels nice!"

But confused fans took to Twitter to comment, with one writing: "Well I’m shocked they have had hugs off screen (said no one ever!) Morning lovelies #ThisMorning."

While another commented: "Why are Phil and Holly acting like they haven't hugged in a long time? #ThisMorning."

A third wrote: "Yeah we all know you’ve had cuddles off screen. We’re not stupid to believe you were social distancing! #ThisMorning."

"get off we all know youve hugged eachother during social distancing #ThisMorning," another quipped.

One joked: "I can now sleep at night knowing they can officially hug."

It comes after Holly and Phil issued a heartfelt message to Ukraine as the Russian invasion rages on.

Introducing the show, Phil said: "Over the weekend, we've all seen the distressing images that continue to come out of Ukraine."

"Well, there has been an outpouring of support across the world," Holly continued. "Tearful protestors gathered in London over the weekend to express their anger at the Russian invasion."

"Also the demonstrations in Berlin, Milan, Madrid, Tokyo," Phil said. "Even within Russia itself, it was reported that around 2,000 people were arrested. You might have noticed that we've added some Ukrainian flags to our river view this morning to show our support and solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

"If you are watching and you have friends or family there at the moment, we're just sending our best of love and our support."

*This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV
