This Morning viewers were left squirming as Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield interviewed Michael Peterson on Wednesday's show.
Michael, 78, was convicted in 2003 of murdering his second wife, Kathleen Peterson, in December 2001.
After eight years, Michael was granted a new trial after the judge ruled a critical prosecution witness gave misleading testimony
In 2017, Michael submitted an Alford plea to the reduced charge of manslaughter. He was sentenced to time already served and freed.
Joining Holly and Phillip in the ITV studio, Michael was more than happy to discuss the details of Kathleen's death and the theories surrounding it after she "fell down the stairs".
As the interview began, Phillip said: "So she is found at the bottom of the stairs, 38 injuries to her body, deep lacerations on her skull, face, back, hands, arms and wrists. So extensive injuries.
"What happened? Did you push her down the stairs?" he then asked as Michael quickly replied: "No, I did not."
Phillip continued: "Did you hit her with a poker?" as Michael said again: "No, I did not."
Phillip, 60, then said: "So explain those accusations," as Michael responded: "I can't, that's one of the strangest things. When I first saw the lacerations, I was horrified, I really was."
"I think you also said that she may have fallen down the stairs a number of times. Not many people fall down the stairs, get up, walk up the stairs and fall down again," Phillip then said to Michael.
"I think she fell. She had alcohol, she had Valium. I don't know, I really wish I could tell you," Michael replied.
But Phillip clearly had a lot to say and fired back: "It's quite convenient though isn't it? It's quite convenient not to know or not to be able to remember, it helps you."
The TV presenter also made a reference to Michael's first wife's friend, Elizabeth, who fell down the stairs and died in Germany.
"I mean she's not the first woman to be found dead at the foot of the stairs that you know," Phillip said, before adding: "It sort of follows you around doesn't it?"
Michael laughed awkwardly before explaining the story, saying: "That really surprised everybody, certainly me and my children. German police, German doctors, American pathologists, American police investigated and it was a stroke."
After tuning in, some This Morning viewers were not impressed with the interview - in particular Phil's questions and comments.
"Phil cracking on likes he’s in Law & Order #ThisMorning," one person joked.
Another tweeted: "Phil is trying really hard to catch old boy out but he’s having none of it! #thismorning."
Someone else claimed: "Phil tryna re pin this murder on the guy lol #ThisMorning."
And a fourth viewer added: "go on Phil keep pushing him #ThisMorning."
A different person asked: "Does Phil suddenly think he’s Columbo?" while another tweeted: "Phil leave its not your job to find out if he did it or not! #thismorning."
This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV and ITV Hub.
