This Morning blasted over 'tone deaf' interview with Charlotte Church

This Morning has been slammed by viewers for talking about Charlotte Church ’s £1.5 million mansion straight after a segment on families struggling to pay their energy bills.

The Welsh singer was discussing her new TV show, Charlotte’s Dream Build, which sees her transform the property into a lavish wellness retreat.

During the ill-timed slot, the 35-year-old admitted she was gambling her life savings on the project, adding: “It’s only money, you’ve got to live a little.”

But ITV viewers were not impressed with millionaire Charlotte’s out of touch comments when so many people in the UK are struggling to heat their homes.

For some Brits it is a case of choosing to ‘eat or heat’ - and things are set to get even worse when energy bills rise again in April.

Before Charlotte’s appearance, This Morning was encouraging viewers to save money by switching supermarkets or renting out their driveways.

Hosts Philip Schofield and Rochelle Humes then interviewed Charlotte, who recently gave birth to daughter Frida under a tree in her back garden.

Speaking about funding the retreat with her own money, Charlotte said: “From the moment I saw the place I totally fell in love with it.

“The way I think about it, I’ve been privileged all my life to have this career and success and the money and therefore the money and freedom that brings.

“It’s only stuff, it’s only money...You’ve got to live a little, and this is where my life is taking me.”

She added: “I’m a socialist so this is taking it out of private ownership and making it something that is for the people.”

After her Charlotte’s appearance on the show, viewers quickly took to Twitter to blast the ill-judged remarks.

One wrote: “Seems a little bit in poor taste #ThisMorning having Charlotte Church on saying ‘it’s only money’ (in relation to her building her wellbeing retreat). When the section before was talking about what you can cut out of your life to afford rising electricity bills.”

A second commented: “Here’s another tone-deaf nobody that will never know what poor and struggling looks like...”

While a third said: “Dream build. Risking everything? With the support of Discovery TV. You’ll be alright. I thought you were for helping people? You have Laura Ashley’s old home, hilarious. No self awareness or filter.”

Others questioned whether Charlotte really was a socialist if she privately owns the property and will be charging people to use it.

“Did Charlotte Church just say she’s a socialist while talking about a property that she privately owns?” one viewer tweeted.

“#ThisMorning I assume Charlotte the Socialist will be being Paid for this TV programme and will be CHARGING people to hire the Wedding Venue and 'Wellness Centre'!” said another.

“Champagne socialism is alive and well on planet Church,” a third chimed in.
