This is why armed police are in Nottingham city centre

Armed police have been on patrol in Nottingham city centre.

Two officers carrying machine guns were spotted in Clumber Street on Saturday (December 21).

However, a spokesman for clarified officers weren't responding to a specific incident.

He said: "It's a routine patrol as part of our operation in relation to the Christmas fayre and the crowded places."

Winter Wonderland, in Old Market Square, features a number of stalls, bars and an ice rink.

The stalls will remain open until Christmas Eve while the bars will be open until New Year's Day.
