Iconic Spitfire plane to perform flyover in Nottinghamshire this weekend

The iconic Spitfire fighter plane will be seen in the skies of Nottinghamshire this weekend as it performs a flyover at a family festival.

The World War Two plane will perform a fly-past over Bilsthorpe on Sunday,September 1 at around 1pm.

It will form part of the entertainment at Bilsthorpe Families Day - a military-themed family event organised by the Royal British Legion Bilsthorpe Branch.

The flyover and other activities will take place at Bilsthorpe Sports Ground, in Eakring Road, where music will be provided by the Rockingham brass band.

Keeley Ward, chair of the Royal British Legion Bilsthorpe Branch, said: "We're putting this event on to try and raise the profile of the branch and encourage people to join us.

"About four years ago we began to struggling as our numbers started falling. You don't need to be former servicemen to join, you just need to want to support us and keep the branch running."

The 42-year-old added: "There will be plenty of activities for children on the day including face-painting, rock-climbing and an obstacle course. The Rockingham group are bringing a 20-piece band to keep everyone entertained too."

A display will also be put on by the Red Barrows Display Team - a group that complete performances maneuvering wheelbarrows simultaneously like the Red Arrows do in aircrafts.

The Spitfire is a British fighter aircraft that was introduced by the Royal Air Force in 1938 and was one of Britain's most used planes during the Battle of Britain, as was the .

There are only around 35 Spitfires that are still flying to date.

The days events will run from 11am to 3pm and other entertainment on the day will include archery and a bar, with a BBQ also taking place along with ice cream being served.

Exhibits and stalls will also be set up at the event by organisations such as Bilsthorpe Heritage Museum, Mansfield Fire Museum, Balderton RAF Research Group and St. Johns Ambulance.
