Staff at a newly-built multi-million pound supermarket on the outskirts of Swansea are getting ready to open the store later this week. Back in February, 2021, supermarket giant Lidl announced plans to open a new store in Gorseinon Road, Penllergaer, on the site of the former Poundstretcher bargain store. The company had to apply to Swansea Council for planning permission - which was given later that year.
The supermarket chain, which already has popular stores around the city in Penlan, Llansamlet and at Parc Tawe in the city centre, has confirmed that the new Penllergaer store will open to the public on Thursday, November 24.
It will stock all the usual food, drink and basic household items and will have parking for both cars and bicycles. WalesOnline also understands it will have an in-store bakery and customer toilets. Confirming the opening date for the new "modern Lidl," a spokesperson said: "Lidl GB has confirmed that its new supermarket on Gorseinon Road in Penllergaer, Swansea, will open for the first time on Thursday, November 24.
"The new store, which has been designed to provide an enhanced shopping experience for the supermarket’s growing customer base, will replace Lidl’s existing store currently on the same road, which will close permanently at 10pm on Wednesday, November 23.
"The store opening times will be between 8am and 10pm Monday to Saturday, and 10am and 4pm on Sunday, delivering Lidl’s offering of fresh, quality and great value produce."
Regional head of property at Lidl GB, George Ledwardc, added: "It is fantastic that we are able to open our doors and welcome everyone into our new store in Penllergaer. We are delighted to be able to improve our offering and deliver even more of our high quality and affordable produce to the local community. We would like to thank all those who have played a part in delivering this new store and now look forward to welcoming everyone through our doors."
