The latest data looking at the Gender Pay Gap in companies, charities and public sector departments across the UK has been published today (Wednesday, April 5) - and in many companies, men still earn more than women. The data, collated by the UK Government and shared online, shows the difference in average earnings between employees, regardless of their roles.
It's different to Equal Pay, which is the legal obligation to pay men and women the same pay for identical work. Instead, Gender Pay Gap data offers an insight into how much more the middle-ranking man is earning compared to the middle-ranking woman, or vice versa. By law, companies of 250 employees or more must publish their Gender Pay Gap figures, which are shared publicly on the Gender Pay Gap service website.
In Wales, some of our biggest and most well-known companies have a particularly striking Gender Pay Gap - including at Cardiff International Airport Ltd., where the middle-ranking ('median') male employee earns 14.7% more than the middle-ranking ('female') employee, and at Swansea City Football Club Ltd., where the median male employee earns 25.5% more than the median female employee. Commenting on the Gender Pay Gap at Cardiff International Airport, a spokesperson explained: "We do take gender pay gap, diversity, and inclusion very seriously at Cardiff Airport. We can confirm that no same job has a difference in pay based on their gender.
"Part of the reason for the gap is unfortunately, as an operating airport there are some departments seeing more males in the nature of the work. However, we are taking steps to diversify this and encouraged to see growth of females within these roles in the last 12 months. For example, the Fire & Rescue department has historically been male-oriented, but we are actively growing with females joining the team."
And explaining their Gender Pay Gap, a spokesperson for Swansea City Football Club added: "We recognise the results of our Gender Pay Gap calculations are significantly greater than the national UK average, however, we feel it necessary to highlight the unique characteristics of our industry, specifically that a significant proportion of our company's total staff costs are focused on a relatively small number of male employees, namely the members of our senior playing squad and management team.
"Notwithstanding the above, our directors are committed to running an organisation with equal opportunities and equal pay regardless of gender. We will continue to look for ways to hire, train and promote female employees across all areas of the organisation."
Interestingly, at Arriva Cymru, which operates a number of bus services in Wales, it is women who earn slightly more. It has a gender pay gap listed on the official data as '-0.8%' which means the median female employee earns 0.8% more than the median male employee. Similarly, at the Welsh Parliament Senedd Commission (Comisiwn Senedd Cymru), the median female employee earns more than the median male employee - a difference of 9.75%.
