This is what Sean Payton missed while taking a break from coaching

Sean Payton’s Denver Broncos era is about to begin.

Payton has been on a vocal tour all off-season, talking about righting the ship with the Broncos, how Russell Wilson needs to change his ways, etc. But before he took on the Broncos’ job, Payton took a one-year sabbatical after spending 15 seasons leading the New Orleans Saints.

There is one thing that Payton especially missed while gone, and perhaps, has brought him back to the coaching fold: game-planning.

Payton’s high-octane offense became a game-planning nightmare for defenses in the NFL for years. So, it makes sense why Payton said game planning is what he missed the most.

“A lot,” Payton said when asked what he missed while away from the game. “Just the film. What you miss — you miss finding something and then it comes up in the game. Then you win the game by whatever, and you realize how significant [it was]. All of us offensively, within the framework of our offense, are diving into the opponent and finding the right balance in Week 1 of not having too much, but good answers.

“There’s a little serenity. There’s some quiet in the evenings when you’re watching tape and you see certain things. You’re always looking for behavior patterns from the opponents, so when you’re able to find something and then you see it work in the game, it’s pretty fulfilling. It’s hard to get that anywhere else.”

Payton has years of experience gam planning against defenses, and this week, his focus is on the Las Vegas Raiders. Denver is set to host its divisional rival on Sunday afternoon.
