This is the bizarre 'water salute' tribute a pilot received at Newcastle Airport

This is the bizarre tradition a retiring pilot was treated to at Newcastle Airport.

Two water cannons fired plumes of liquid into the air to form an arch for the plane to pass through this weekend.

'Water salutes' are a fairly common practice in the aviation industry and are usually performed to celebrate a landmark flight.

A Loganair flight receives a 'water salute' at Newcastle Airport (Newcastle International Airport)

The planes pass through the guard of honour while taxiing on the runway.

Newcastle International Airport posted the video on its Facebook page with a message wishing the outgoing pilot a happy retirement.

He said: "This weekend we surprised Loganair pilot Dave Bond with a water salute on his last ever flight before retiring.

"An industry veteran, Dave has been a captain for many years and is a very popular figure among the team.

"Happy retirement Dave!"

It's not the first time the quirky tradition has played out on the tarmac at Newcastle.

Back in March 2016, a Vueling Airlines flight got the water salute treatment to celebrate the launch of flights from the North East to  Barcelona.
