With the sunshine finally making a solid appearance and the skies staying clear, it’s the perfect time for a bit of outdoor relaxation. But just when you think you’ve got your peaceful garden moment sorted — book in hand, cuppa by your side — the last thing you want to see is a rat darting across the lawn. Unfortunately, that’s been the grim reality for quite a few people recently.
Rats don’t just give you the creeps; they can seriously mess with your garden and even pose health risks, thanks to the diseases they carry. While it’s tempting to reach for poison or snap traps, there’s a growing trend for more natural (and less grim) solutions — and one in particular is grabbing major attention online, reported the Sun.
A TikTok user, @toprecipe_andtips, has shared a DIY remedy that’s not only easy to make, but also super budget-friendly. The star ingredient? A humble bar of soap.
According to the viral video, which has already clocked up over 15 million views, all you need is a few household bits: a small grating of soap, a dollop of toothpaste, two spoonfuls of refined sugar, and some stale bread. Mix it all together and you’ve got what the TikToker describes as a “powerful homemade poison for rats.”
The idea is that the sugar and bread lure the rats in, but the rest of the mix is lethal once ingested. The creator suggests placing the mixture near drains and around the garden — basically anywhere you’ve spotted unwanted visitors.
It didn’t take long for the internet to jump on the hack. One user commented, “This is unbelievable! I will try it out.” Another chimed in with “Fantastic, amazing!” while a third simply said, “Great idea!”
For those after a slightly more humane route, there are other options too. Rats reportedly can’t stand the scent of peppermint, onions, or garlic, so planting these in the garden could help keep them at bay. You can also whip up a natural repellent using chilli flakes if you’re feeling crafty.
So, whether you’re team DIY poison or prefer to keep things green and gentle, there’s more than one way to reclaim your garden from these furry intruders — and you don’t need to break the bank doing it.
