Thirsty squirrel seen drinking takeaway coffee on Newport street

A cheeky squirrel thought it would have a quick drink of a takeaway coffee in the sunshine earlier today (Friday, March 25). The parched rodent was spotted holding a Starbucks plastic cup in his paws as he slurped away at the contents in Newport.

Bemused bystanders watched the animal strolling down the street with the item in his jaws in the Shaftesbury area of the city, before disappearing up a tree and onto a roof in order to finish off the drink. Local man Lee Harris said he had to do a double take when he saw it. You can keep up to date with more news from around Newport by subscribing to our daily newsletter.

"He was just sitting there on the pavement holding the cup with both arms," he said. "Clearly someone had thrown it on the floor or the little critter had grabbed it from out of a nearby rubbish bin.

"Either way he was clearly enjoying the sweet treat. And he wasn't letting it go either - he dragged it all the way up onto someone's roof before polishing it off.

The caffeine certainly made him move fast (Lee Harris)
The squirrel took the drink up onto someone's roof before finishing it off (Lee Harris)

"It's quite warm today so maybe he needed to cool down, but the caffeine high really did make him shift. I've never seen a squirrel move so fast.

"And I've certainly never see a squirrel running about whilst drinking a coffee before. That was a first for me."
