Things to do with kids in and around Greater Manchester this Coronation weekend

The Coronation weekend is almost here so for many families that means a three-day break.

If you're looking for something to keep the little people in your life happy then look no further.

Whether you are celebrating the Coronation or not, there are loads of events and places to go in and around Greater Manchester.

Here are a few suggestions to give you a little inspiration for the days ahead.

Totally Jurassic

A new dinosaur experience has opened just in time for the bank holiday weekend.

Totally Jurassic is billed as 'an immersive dino experience' featuring more than 100 models, with everything from the mighty T-Rex to the spiky stegosaurus.

Families can walk among the huge static models at the exhibition in Walkden Town Centre, Salford, as well as learning fun facts and taking photos along the way.

Family tickets cost £20. Single tickets cost £5.95 for adults and children and under twos go free.

The event is aimed at all ages, but organisers say it'll mostly be enjoyed by pre-school and primary aged children.

Slots can be booked every half an hour between 10am and 3pm across the three-day weekend and is running for four weeks. Visit the website to book.

Brookside Miniature Railway

The royal flags are out in force at the miniature railway attraction at Brookside Garden Centre, in Poynton.

A vintage funfair is running over the three days between 11am and 4pm and the railway is operating trains on Sunday and Monday.

The fair features High Flying Swingboats, where kids can power their own boat to a desired height by pulling a rope just as they would have done in Victorian times. And there are the usual favourites like the family Jungle Speedway, Toyland, Hook a Duck, Shooting Saloon, Strikers and Chair-o-planes.

Some Coronation Specials will also be on the menu at the Topiary Restaurant, including The King's Quiche and homemade Great British cupcakes.

Train rides cost £2.50 per person, under twos free.

BeWILDerwood

The award-winning woodland adventure park that is BeWILDerwood is open across all three days but tickets have already been selling fast.

There's all sorts for families to see and do inside the magical woodlands, including slippery slides, muddled mazes and extra-long zip wires.

It's not just a playground though, there's storytelling, face painting, shows, crafts and a whole lot more included in the ticket price - and you can stay all day to make the most of it.

Tickets, from £13.50, can be booked online.

Legoland Discovery Centre Manchester

A 'celebration built for a King' is taking place at Legoland this weekend.

Families are being told to be 'ready for mocktails, character mascots, mesmerizing magic tricks and bricktastic photo opportunities as we party like royalty' between 9.30 am and 12.30 pm and then 1.30pm to 4.30pm on Saturday, May 6 and Sunday, May 7.

The event, which will also include balloon modelling and a DJ, and is included in the usual ticket price, which gives access to the attraction, including Kingdom Quest and Merlin’s Apprentice rides, 4D cinema experience, Miniland, build and test areas, a Ninjago play area and more.

Limited tickets are available and cost £25 per person with under threes able to attend for free with a paying adult. Book online.

Spring Escape, The Trafford Centre

The giant outdoor funfair is running at The Trafford Centre across all three days.

Spring Escape features a host of rides and attractions for all ages, including Starflyer, Rock Rage, Waterballs, Bumper Boats, Waveswinger, Funhouse and a giant inflatable clown.

Families pay a £2.80 entry fee (£3.50 on the door) to access the area and rides are either paid for with individual tokens or wristbands, which can be purchased online, or from kiosks at the venue.

The event opens from 12pm to 8pm on all three days.

Coronation Skate Party

A King's Coronation roller skating party takes place in Tameside over the weekend.

The event is hosted by Roller Energy UK and is being held at Oxford Park in Ashton, at 10am on Saturday, May 6.

The session runs for an hour-and-a-half and includes games, face painting and prizes for the best dressed.

Tickets cost £6.50 and you can pay on entry, £2 skate hire.

RHS Garden Bridgwater

There'll be live music at RHS Bridgewater across the long weekend.

Families will also be able to join in bunting making workshops, running from 10.30am to 12pm on all three days.

On Saturday there'll be music from Manchester's Blackley Band; on Sunday carnival favourites Cacophany Arkestra, pictured, will fill the garden with a high energy mix of Soca and Calypso tunes, with a hint of jazz and Afro-beat; and on Monday The Untold Orchestra will perform what promises to be 'a refreshing, uplifting and exciting musical experience where dancing, singing and clapping along are totally encouraged'.

Science and Industry Museum

The 'gaming extravaganza' Power Up is on across all three days at the museum.

With five decades of games and over 100 different consoles to enjoy, visitors can rediscover classic arcade favourites like Pac-Man or explore the future of gaming through virtual reality experiences.

This weekend is also one of the last chances to catch a special music exhibition at the museum before it closes on May 21.

'Turn It Up: The power of music' lets families 'play, experiment and make music together in the specially commissioned musical playground'.

The museum is open from 10am to 5pm Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday.

General admission tickets to the museum are free but must be booked online. Tickets for Turn It Up and Power Up cost £8 for adults and £6 for children and must also be booked online.
