Things to do in Derry in August

The month of July saw the city come alive with thousands of visitors coming to Derry during the week of the Foyle Maritime Festival and Foyle Cup football tournament.

You may think its time for everyone to have a well-deserved rest after hosting the clipper boat crews and taking part in the festivities, but there are plenty of events to get excited about in August as we enjoy the halfway point in the summer holidays.

From family fun to theatre we're sure there is something to suit everyone here.

Here are some of the highlights we can look forward to in the coming month:

  • Foyle Pride

Foyle Pride parade, Derry (Brendan Harkin)

A highlight of the Derry summer season, Foyle Pride will finish the summer off with a bang with its usual parade taking place on Saturday August 27.

The city centre will be alive with colour and music as the much-loved parade makes its way through the city centre to the guildhall square.

There will be plenty of family-friendly activities and educational workshops in the build up to the main parade day, so keep an eye on the Foyle Pride Facebook page for more updates.

  • Gasyard Feile

This year, the Gasyard Feile is celebrating its 30th anniversary. What began as a one day festival in 1993 has since grown into the biggest community arts festival in the North West, attracting over 20,000 people annually to the programme of events.

This year, from August 13 - 20, over 100 events will take place across the Bogside, Brandywell, Creggan, Bishop Street, Fountain and Derry City Centre, including music, literature, sport, education, visual arts, carnival, fun days, health, discussions, lectures, and conferences.

  • Jog in the Bog

The ever popular jog in the bog returns this year to the delight of fitness lovers in the city. Perfect for seasoned runners and complete beginners, the event is proven incredibly busy year after year.

This year, a kids superhero race will take place as well as the normal Jog in the Bog itself. Those interested need to be quick as registration closes on Monday August 1.

  • Carnival of Colours

The energetic and colourful Carnival of Colours is set to return on Saturday August 6 and Sunday August 7.

The programme for the weekend will be jam-packed with circus-themed treats featuring the very best of International Street Theatre, IYSC’s own walkabout characters and performances, circus workshops, arts and crafts, graffiti arts demos and an exciting programme of music from the Nerve Centre.

The festival brings people together from all walks of life for a shared cultural experience and highlights Derry as an exciting, beautiful and progressive destination for events and arts activity.

  • SIX at the Millennium Forum

The international smash hit musical SIX is coming to Millennium Forum!

From Tudor Queens to Pop Princesses, the six wives of Henry VIII take to the mic to tell their tales, remixing five hundred years of historical heartbreak into an 80-minute celebration of 21st century girl power.

The show runs from Tuesday August 23 to Saturday August 27 and tickets can be bought here.
