Thierry Henry makes clear his preference in Erling Haaland vs Kylian Mbappe debate

Thierry Henry has backed Kylian Mbappe over Erling Haaland as debate rages on over the two superstar frontmen.

Mbappe and Haaland both made scoring starts in the Champions League on Tuesday night. Haaland scored once in each half as City romped to a 4-0 win away to Sevilla, while Mbappe scored both of Paris Saint-Germain's goals as they kicked off their campaign by beating Juventus at the Parc des Princes.

Henry, like Mbappe, started out at Monaco before enjoying the best years of his career elsewhere. It might not be a huge surprise, then, to learn the former Arsenal star backed his compatriot when asked about his preference.

While opting for Mbappe, Henry pointed towards the World Cup winner's versatility. "Mbappe can create and finish. Haaland doesn't create. He finishes," the pundit told CBS.

"Mbappe can play on the right and on the left. He can play in the middle. Haaland can only play in the middle.

"He is a magnificent player and with him they can win the Champions League last year. Against Real Madrid, if it was him at the end of those chances that they missed, they will have been focused on scoring one or two. For now, Mbappe is still my vote."

Mbappe's opener came after a defence-splitting pass from Neymar, and the goalscorer had played down reports of a spat between the pair. A penalty row had prompted manager Christophe Galtier to call a team meeting, but Mbappe stressed there was nothing to worry about.

"This is the sixth year with Neymar. We have always had a relationship like this, based on respect, but sometimes with warmer and colder moments," he said in a press conference before the Juventus game. "It is the nature of our relationship. I have a lot of respect for the player that he is.

'When you have two players with such a strong character, you have moments like that, but always with respect and in the interest of PSG."

Haaland, meanwhile, became the fastest ever player to reach 25 Champions League goals with his brace in Spain. The former Borussia Dortmund star reached the milestone in just 20 appearances, smashing the record of 30 games previously held jointly by Pippo Inzaghi and Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Mbappe took 42 games to reach the milestone - the same number as current teammate Lionel Messi - and also became the youngest player to score 35 in the competition with his double against Juve. However, a further 10 goals this season for Haaland, who is 18 months younger than Mbappe, would also see the Manchester City man claim that record.
