Thierry Henry has changed his mind about Arsenal amid failure prediction under Mikel Arteta

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has caused quite a stir by setting a top-four target for Mikel Arteta.

Not since Unai Emery's one and only full season as head coach have the Gunners had a better chance of sealing a return to the Champions League for the first time since the 2016/2017 campaign.

Currently sitting sixth in the Premier League table, Arsenal know that winning their three games in hand will put them in pole position for fourth spot ahead of Manchester United, West Ham United, Wolves and Tottenham Hotspur.

With all four sides dropping points last weekend, results were perfect for Arteta 's side who weren't in action due to their game against Chelsea being postponed as the Blues were taking part in the FIFA Club World Cup final.

Just 16 Premier League fixtures remain for Arsenal this season and it may take around 67 points to win the top-four race, as that's been enough in each of the past two campaigns.

That would mean the Gunners are looking at around nine more wins and a draw in the best-case scenario from their remaining games.

And despite his former club still having to face all of their top-four rivals as well as Liverpool and Chelsea, Henry has raised the stakes by suggesting anything less than a fourth-placed finish would be considered a failure in his eyes.

"The best thing about Arsenal is that they didn't play," the Frenchman said CBS Sports. "West Ham didn't take advantage of it. Tottenham has never taken advantage of it.

"But Arsenal had to go and win at Wolves. That was a massive win, so there are still a lot of games to go.

"For me, if they don't do it, as I said at the start of the season, then it will be a failure."

Henry's impression that Arsenal finishing outside the top-four this season would be a failure is rather interesting, as around four months ago he didn't sound too confident about his former club even qualifying for Europe at all, let alone the Champions League.

This was following the Gunners' 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace back in October when the Frenchman was on punditry duty for CBS Sports during their coverage of the Champions League.

During a quickfire round of questions, he was asked if Arsenal will qualify for Europe this season and his response what quite startling.

"Not with what I saw recently," he said.

"It hurts a lot," Henry added when reflecting on Arsenal not being involved in any European competition this season. "In the past few days it was hurting to put the television on and see those teams in there and not see Arsenal there, it was painful."

Of course, Arsenal's position in the table has improved since Henry's claim. They were 12th in the league at the time with 11 points from eight games and a top-four push seemed unlikely.

Fast forward a few months and the fact the Frenchman wouldn't be happy with a fifth-placed finish all but proves he's changed his mind with regards to the Gunners' European fate, as he clearly thinks they have a good chance of claiming fourth.

In fact, suggesting it would be a failure otherwise could mean Henry thinks Arsenal are favourites in the race.

Whether Arteta can prove him right come May remains to be seen, but for now, his side are well on course to be playing Champions League football once again next season.
