Thierry Henry bursts out laughing as Tottenham named Champions League dark horses

Theirry Henry couldn't contain his laughter after Clint Dempsey backed Tottenham to win this season's Champions League.

A resurgent Spurs are back in Europe's premier competition this term following the appointment of Antonio Conte last November. The Italian led Tottenham from eighth to fourth in the Premier League last season after succeeding the sacked Nuno Espirito Santo.

Some critics are backing Conte's side to win silverware this season, ending a 15-year wait for a trophy. Since winning the FA Cup final against Brian Clough's Nottingham Forest in 1991, Spurs have lifted just two trophies - the EFL Cup in 1999 and 2008.

Tottenham came close to success under Mauricio Pochettino, reaching the EFL Cup final in 2015 and the Champions League final in 2019. Jose Mourinho also led Spurs to the EFL Cup final in 2021 but was sacked a week before the 1-0 defeat to Manchester City.

Henry, Dempsey and Jamie Carragher were asked to pick their winner for this season's Champions League. Carragher picked Man City before Henry added: "I'm going to have to echo what Jamie said about Manchester City. It's about time they win it.

"And again, I'm going to talk about Pep [Guardiola]. I want him to validate what he's doing at City. I'm repeating myself every year, but having [new signing Erling] Haaland - I think for me makes it even more pressure on them to perform.

"Jamie said it, you can talk about a lot of teams - the usual suspects with there - but what I want to see this year, I can see the Italian league growing with players going there and teams getting better. But can they get better in the Champions League."

Dempsey was then asked for his pick. "I'll do something different, I'll pick a dark horse," teased the former Tottenham midfielder. "I'm not biased at all, but I think maybe Tottenham."

Henry and Carragher then burst out laughing, with the Frenchman doing so in typical comical fashion before asking: "Shall I leave now?"

Dempsey then explained himself by adding: "Conte's a winner, maybe not necessarily having a great record in the Champions League. I think it's them. They're looking like they've gone strength to strength, they've done well in the transfer window."

Yet Arsenal legend Henry wasn't having any of it, continuing to laugh while saying: "Not that, not that..."

Conte is desperate to win the Champions League after losing the 2003 final to AC Milan as a Juventus player. "Was my last final in my career played at Manchester United and finished 0-0," said Conte ahead of Tottenham's Champions League opener against Marseille on Wednesday night. "I hit crossbar with a header and was unlucky. Lost with penalties. [Milan manager] Ancelotti previous season was at Juventus and then change and went be coach with Milan and I think he had big big revenge."
