Mubashar Hussain: Shocking moment thief mows down police officer with hijacked patrol car

Police have released shocking footage which shows a car thief mowing down an officer with his own patrol car, leaving him with "life-changing" injuries.

Mubashar Hussain, 29, was sentenced to 12 years in jail at Birmingham Crown Court on Tuesday for causing grievous bodily harm to West Midlands Police Pc Gareth Phillips.

PC Gareth Phillips, 42, was left with a shattered pelvis and could be in hospital for several months after his BMW was hijacked at a traffic stop in Moseley, Birmingham, on August 10.

Terrifying footage shows the officer getting struck by his own vehicle as Hussain speeds off at up to 97mph.

The thief's co-defendant Ahsan Ghafoor can be seen in the video throwing a brick at the police car before officers attempt to detain the suspects.

Hussain, who was banned from driving at the time and has no fixed address, was later arrested a mile-and-a-half away in the Sparkbrook area and was originally charged with attempted murder.

In September, he pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm, two counts of vehicle theft, dangerous driving, two counts of driving while disqualified, two counts of assault, assaulting an emergency worker, aggravated vehicle-taking, and two charges of having no insurance.

The thefts relate to another incidents where cars had been stolen.

Sentencing Hussain, Judge Mark Wall QC said: "You are a habitual dangerous driver. The level of your offending is increasing and not diminishing."

Hussain's co-defendant Ghafoor was jailed for 28 months after admitting two counts of car theft and three other offences including dangerous driving.

Judge Wall told Hussain he will serve at least two-thirds of the 12-year sentence - and be required to spend an extended five-year period on licence following his eventual release.
