Thiago Silva slams Chelsea as 'unhappy' admission could hand Liverpool transfer boost

Thiago Silva has criticised Chelsea's decision-making which has left the club 11th in the Premier League and out of all cup competitions - as Liverpool continue to keep tabs on two of the London side's players.

Chelsea exited the Champions League on Tuesday evening after their 4-0 aggregate defeat to Real Madrid at the quarter-final stage of the competition, only adding to what has been a disastrous season for the club.

Co-owner Todd Boehly has overseen a spending spree in excess of £600million since coming into power in May of last year, resulting in the club having far too many players to choose from and a number of stars on high wages subsequently missing out on matchday squads.

The managerial appointment of Graham Potter after the sacking of Thomas Tuchel was meant to mark a new direction for a club which has historically made rash decisions at boardroom level, though Chelsea are continuing to make the same mistakes of old.

Expressing his discomfort at the current situation, Silva told TNT Sports: "I think the first step has been made. An incorrect step. but it has been made. We can't be blaming managers if we don't take responsibility. It's a hard period for the club with a lot of indecision: change of ownership, new players arriving. We had to increase the size of the changing room because it didn't fit the size of the squad.

"A positive point is that there are amazing players in the squad but on the other hand there are always players that are going to be unhappy. There is always going to be someone upset because not everyone can play. The manager can only pick 11 from a squad of 30-something – that’s tough. Some can’t make the squad, we signed eight in January, we need to stop and put a strategy in place otherwise next season we could make the same mistakes."

"Everybody talks too much about replacing managers. I think we, as players, must also take responsibility," the centre-back continued. "We have had three managers this season, plus a fourth with Bruno where we failed to win. We have lost today and with Lampard we have failed to win. Everybody is talking about the manager but we must look at what has been done wrong and try to change."

Unrest at Stamford Bridge may come as good news to Liverpool, who are interested in Chelsea's midfield duo of Conor Gallagher and Mason Mount. The ECHO understands the latter is a priority target for the Reds this summer as Jurgen Klopp plots a revamp of his midfield department.

It has been widely reported Chelsea will need to offload a number of squad players to balance their books, with Gallagher and Mount both said to be up for sale. The toxic environment which exists at present could be enough to convince the duo to seek pastures new in the coming weeks, something Liverpool will look to take full advantage of.
