Thiago Silva confirms Chelsea contract stance as Todd Boehly and Graham Potter continue rebuild

Thiago Silva has confirmed talks with Chelsea over a new contract are advancing. The 38-year-old is set to leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season once his deal expires.

He's featured 18 times for the Blues in the Premier League this season and has remained an integral feature in the side. Despite the Brazil international's impressive displays, the west Londoners have struggled to keep the ball out of their net for much of the campaign.

Chelsea's performances have improved following the arrival of Benoit Badiashile in January and, as Silva begins to form a promising relationship with the 21-year-old, it's in the club's best interest to hold onto the veteran defender. As Graham Potter builds a young side, the Brazilian will be central to the Blues' project as he continues to act as a beacon of guidance on and off the pitch.

Speaking to ESPN, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano, Silva said: "We are negotiating. It will probably happen in the next days. My plan is to continue at Chelsea and Chelsea want to continue with me. Chelsea need me with the rebuilding of the club — and here I am."

Ahead of the World Cup in Qatar, Silva insisted that his decision to leave Paris Saint-Germain for Chelsea was correct despite those that said otherwise and doubted him. As quoted by TribalFootball, he said: "It was a tough time when I left PSG.

"Although I was sure my qualities were intact, I know that others doubted me and whether the decision to switch to Chelsea was the right one. It culminated in us winning the Champions League in 2021. It was the perfect way to disprove people who doubted."

Silva added that he's keen to continue proving people wrong despite his age, while stressing the importance of communication with Chelsea over a new deal. He said: "I can tell you that what is important is to continue playing at a high level and help the team to achieve the best possible results.

"For sure, there will be a time when we need to talk, it could be before the World Cup or after the World Cup because I need to know whether I will have a new contract with Chelsea for my family arrangements.

"If I don’t have a new contract, I will have to decide what to do. For my family, it's an important decision. We will see what happens."
