THG, Boohoo, Matalan and JD Sports: The 19 latest North West hires and promotions

Household names such as JD Sports and Boohoo have made a string of major hires and promotions over the last week or so.

Other North West companies such as Matalan and THG have also made major announcements.

Below, we round up the latest hires and promotions that we feel you should not miss.

THG

THG is headquartered in Greater Manchester (THG)

A director at Britain's biggest tobacco company has joined the board at software and online retail giant THG.

Sue Farr has taken on the role of senior independent director at the Manchester-headquartered group.

Ms Farr currently holds the same position at British American Tobacco as well as Altrincham-based car dealership chain, Lookers.

JD Sports

JD Sports is headquartered in Bury, Greater Manchester (JD Sports)

The chairman of Topps Tiles, who has been facing a shareholder bid to oust him, is to join the board of JD Sports.

Darren Shapland will become a non-executive director at the Greater Manchester-headquartered retail giant from June 1.

Mr Shapland has previously been the CEO of Carpetright and CFO of Sainsbury's, Superdrug and a number of divisions of The Burton Group Plc.

JD Sports has also announced that Angela Luger will also join its board as a non-executive director on June 1.

Separately, the group has also appointed Michael Armstrong as global managing director.

Boohoo

Boohoo is headquartered in Manchester (Boohoo)

The boss of an activist shareholder group, which has a stake in THG, has joined the board of fashion giant Boohoo.

John Goold is the chief executive of Kelso Group having previously co-founded Arden Partners before joining Zeus Capital as CEO.

He has joined the Manchester group with immediate effect as a non-executive director and will become chairman of the audit committee and be a member of the nomination, remuneration and risk committees.

Matalan

Ali Jones of Matalan (Matalan)

Liverpool-headquartered Matalan has appointed Ali Jones into the new role of chief customer and omni-channel officer.

Most recently, she was customer and community director at the Co-op Group from 2018 to 2022, and previously held senior brand, omni-channel and marketing roles at Woolworths Australia, Debenhams, M&S, Next and Arcadia Group.

She said: "I am both excited and honoured to be joining such a great brand and look forward to working again with Jo and with Karl-Heinz and the wider team at Matalan."

Addleshaw Goddard

Nadine Waters, Mark Crane, Andrew Moore and Michael Corbett have been made partners at Addleshaw Goddard (Addleshaw Goddard)

Law firm Addleshaw Goddard has announced four new partner promotions in its Manchester office at One St Peter's Square.

Nadine Waters (commercial), Mark Crane (competition), Andrew Moore (employment) and Michael Corbett (real estate) are part of a 20-strong promotion round which will bring the firm's total global partner headcount to 369.

Senior partner Charles Penney said: "We are extremely pleased again this year to have been able to promote a talented group of individuals drawn from all our practices, sectors and locations."

WorkNest

Chester-headquartered WorkNest has appointed Iftikhar (Ifti) Ahmed as its new chief executive and promoted Gary Jones to chief financial officer.

Mr Ahmed has held the position of chief operating officer since September 2021 .

Mr Jones had previously been group finance director.

Invisible Systems

Manchester-based Internet of Things (IoT) firm Invisible Systems has bolstered its senior leadership team with the hire of Claire Robinson as director of sales, and the promotion of Guy Thouret to chief technical officer.

Mrs Robinson has joined Invisible Systems from a senior sales manager role at Lenovo and previously worked as head of UK business sales for Epson.

CEO Jamie Robertson said: "Hiring Claire with her depth of knowledge and expertise is demonstrative of our goals here at Invisible Systems to bring in the best people, to do the best work, to support our incredible clients."

Beyond Law Group

Matt Fleetwood, Amanda McAlister and James Corlett of Beyond Law Group (Beyond Law Group)

Beyond Law Group has announced the promotion of James Corlett to managing partner of its specialist corporate and commercial practice, Beyond Corporate.

He said: "I am delighted to take my new role as managing partner of Beyond Corporate and will relish the opportunity to broaden my skillset and develop my leadership skills further.

"I hope to bring a fresh outlook to the business and positively influence the direction and development of Beyond Corporate, its teams and its people."

Davis Blank Furniss

Davis Blank Furniss - the Manchester and Glossop-based law firm – has promoted Rebecca Taylor to partner in its dispute resolution team, and Lauren Sever to senior associate solicitor in the commercial, corporate and employment department.

Managing partner Richard Hamilton said: "Rebecca and Lauren have become key members of the team, so we are delighted to announce their respective promotions – especially as they are both are hugely talented and dedicated lawyers who put their clients at the centre of everything they do."

Wain Estates

Danielle Grimshaw of Wain Estates (Wain Estates)

Land and property company Wain Estates has appointed an in-house management accountant.

Danielle Grimshaw, who gained her AAT qualification in private practice, has more than 10 years experience in accounting and joins Wain Estates from Manchester based Charles & Ivy.

She said: "I always knew I wanted to be an accountant and discovered you could take your AAT qualifications while working so wrote to all the local firms in my area giving them information about an AAT apprenticeship scheme and asking if they would take me on."

APEM Group

Alistair Davison of APEM Group (APEM Group)

Stockport-headquartered APEM Group has announced the appointment of Alistair Davison.

Mr Davison has joined from HaskoningDHV to become managing director of APEM’s marine and consents division.

In his new role, he will be responsible for the continued growth of the division which now has a team of 140 sector experts.
