'They want to live in freedom' - Hundreds gather in Alnwick for pro-Ukraine march led by Duke of Northumberland

Hundreds of people came together in Alnwick to show their solidarity for the people of Ukraine.

The Duke and Duchess of Northumberland were among those who took part in a parade on Sunday, March 13, that aimed to show support for Ukraine following Russia's invasion.

Hundreds of civilians have been killed and millions more have been forced to flee their homes as Russian forces continue their attack.

Many people taking part in the event chose to wear blue and yellow clothes and ribbons or carry a Ukrainian flag as they gathered in Alnwick Market Place.

The parade was led by the Duke’s Piper Andrew Davison through the Bondgate Tower and congregated around the War Memorial.

It then culminated in the raising of the Ukrainian flag at the Column Field.

Addressing the crowd at the event, Ralph Percy, Duke of Northumberland, said: "The people of Alnwick have been incredibly generous to the Ukrainian people in their hour of need.

"This parade is our way of expressing further solidarity for a people who, like us, wish to live their lives in liberty and freedom and not under the yoke of an authoritarian dictatorship.

Alnwick Town Mayor, Councillor Lynda Wearn, also addressed the gathering, adding: “I just want to say how proud I am of the people of this community, from the response there has been with the donations given to help refugees to the turn out today.”
