'They are our family': Hundreds call for Gaza ceasefire and remember child victims

HUNDREDS of people gathered in Glasgow city centre today to call for a ceasefire in Gaza and commemorate children who were killed in the war.

In the first half of the demonstration, carers and parents came together on George Square to hear speeches and "send a message to the UK Government".

People chanted and held up signs while listening to the speakers, then children came forward to place stuffed animals on benches, as they remembered the victims with a minute of silence.

Doaa Abuamer, a member of the Palestinian community, addressed the crowd.

She has been living in Glasgow since 2018 but her family is still in Palestine.

The 38-year-old said: "It's really important for the public to come together and show that this massacre and genocide against Palestinians has to be stopped and a ceasefire has to be agreed upon immediately.

"More than 3,000 children have been killed so far, which is a shame to humanity.

"It's important to put pressure on the UK government to tell them what the public actually wants. Hopefully, this message we send today will reach the policymakers.

"They are our family, friends, neighbours.

"My mother, siblings, cousins, relatives are all in Gaza. For the last three weeks, I have been constantly following the news on my phone to make sure they are safe.

"I am worried about all of them, I'm always thinking of them.

"It's been difficult to have a proper phone call with them because the internet has been cut off.

"It's terrifying for me not to know if they are okay, if they are alive or not."
