When we want some sunshine in our living spaces, we can count on two options: bright decor, and an episode of The Drew Barrymore Show. Both provide endless cheer and joy in our homes, and it turns out that they are connected in more ways than one.
The talk show host and actor recently paired up with Etsy to curate a gift guide, and in a video posted to her Instagram page, she revealed some of the items she gifted to her colleagues. One gift stood out: a pair of rainbow candlesticks housed in handmade, tapered candleholders. Not only do they suit Barrymore's vibrant personality, but they also tap into one of the year's hottest design trends – dopamine decor.
A trend that hinges on brightness and positivity, dopamine decor has seen a surge in interest over the last several months, with many of us looking to incorporate joyful pieces into our homes.
'Dopamine decor is inspired by the brain chemical dopamine, often referred to as the "feel-good" neurotransmitter,' says interior designer Nina Lichtenstein. 'It's associated with pleasure, motivation, and reward. This desgin trend seeks to translate those feelings into physical spaces through the use of bold colors, whimsical patterns, eclectic furnishings, and cheerful accessories. The aim is to create environments that lift spirits, inspire creativity, and promote a sense of well-being.'
While vibrant paint colors are a large-scale way to implement dopamine decor into the home, smaller pieces, such as candlesticks and candlestick holders, are just as effective.
'Accessories are key to dopamine decor,' Lichtenstein says. 'Think of items that make you smile or spark a happy memory. This could be a collection of colorful throw pillows, playful artwork, whimsical lamps, or even a gallery wall filled with personal photos and mementos.'
Lichtenstein says that 'bright yellows, electric blues, vivid pinks, and energetic greens,' are all cornerstones of the dopamine decor style, but soft neutrals have their place in the trend, too.
'While dopamine decor is all about color, starting with a neutral base can provide a backdrop that makes those colors pop,' the designer states. 'Walls in shades of white, cream, or soft gray can help balance the more vibrant elements of the room.'
