'There’s no chance' - Striker explains why he snubbed Liverpool transfer after Merseyside visit

Brighton youngster Evan Ferguson has explained why he rejected a move to Liverpool.

The Reds were apparently interested in signing the young striker when he was at Irish club Bohemians. He completed a move to Brighton in January 2021, and has since impressed for the club’s Under-23 side.

Ferguson scored eight goals in 17 Premier League 2 appearances for Brighton’s Under-23 side. He was also awarded first-team chances by Graham Potter in the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Premier League last season.

And Ferguson has now admitted that he opted against a move to Liverpool due to thinking he would not get those chances. The 17-year-old says that seeing other young players who sign for the Reds “fade away” played a key role in his decision not to move to Merseyside.

“I went to Liverpool a few times,” Ferguson told The Athletic. “It’s a good club, but you see so many boys at Liverpool just fading away and there’s no chance to get in the first team.

“I was thinking, ‘Do I just want to play two years of under-18s and then go to the 23s and go from there to where?’

“Brighton is a good club. The people working around are always there to help.”
