STORMZY has made a bit of a grammar error in his latest song – and it involves Scotland.
The song reimagines Stormzy’s life if his music career was unsuccessful. The award-winning rapper is pretty set now, but he previously worked at an oil refinery and according to the song – his job in the oil and gas industry could have brought him to Shetland.
In his track Longevity Flow (Tom Cruise and Lewis Hamilton randomly pop up in the music video), he states, “could’ve been an engineer in the Shetlands”.
Wait. The Shetlands? Where? The Jouker dusted of his old textbook to find out where The Shetlands is…
English uses the definite article, the, in front of some geographical names but not in front of others.
You should not use the when referring to islands Saint Lucia, Antigua, Grenada, or Shetland.
But you can when referring to island chains such as THE Pacific Islands or THE Shetland Islands.
Therefore, there is no such place as The Shetlands.
Sorry Stormzy, but you could not have been an engineer in The Shetlands.
