'There is guilt' - Italian media react to Inter Milan's 'beautiful' Champions League win over Liverpool

Liverpool are through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League despite their defeat to Inter Milan.

The Reds lost the last-16 second-leg tie 1-0 at Anfield on Tuesday night but progress to the next round as 2-1 aggregate winners following their 2-0 victory at the San Siro in the first leg.

Lautaro Martinez got his first goal in this season's competition to set up a finish that may have been more tense had his team-mate Alexis Sanchez not been shown a red card moments later.

So while Inter return home with a notable win in the bag, it is Liverpool who march on.

And here's what the Italian media made of the match ( note: These reports have been translated into English).

Luca Taidelli, via Gazzetta dello Sport

“Applause and anger. Inter wins at Anfield with a super goal from Lautaro (dry in the Champions League for 490 days) but Liverpool go to the quarter-finals thanks to the 2-0 first leg.

“After the magic of the Bull there would have been an abundant half hour to dream, but Sanchez immediately left deserving the second yellow when Dzeko was now ready to take his place.

“The Reds, long masters of the field, have hit three posts. Injuries to De Vrij and Brozovic, to be evaluated in view of Sunday night's away match in Turin.

“Klopp does not give up on Manè in the trident with Jota and Salah, Inzaghi instead keeps Dzeko on the bench and focuses on Sanchez to support Lautaro. As expected, Vidal is still there for the suspended Barella.

“The Nerazzurri start well, pressing high and preventing the Reds from building.

“As in the first leg, however, the guests fail to make themselves really dangerous in the last 20 metres, despite the high outsides and the insertions of a generous Vidal.

“The other analogy with respect to the match in Milan is set kicks. I expect that in the double clash it should have been a strong point of the Italian champions, but which had instead led to the two English goals."

“There is no joy for Inter. Satisfaction yes, pride as well, courage too. But not joy, unfortunately.

“Because the 1-0 with which he wins in Liverpool is not enough to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Champions League, just as it was not enough to go to extra-time.

“There is no joy because there is guilt. One minute after the advantage of Lautaro Martinez (62', right cut and blown by the wind that slipped at the intersection of Alisson's goalposts), Sanchez was sent off (63') for a double yellow card.

“The first foul, the Chilean, had committed in the first half on Thiago Alcantara and, in my opinion, had gone well, because his swipe on the opponent's left leg could already have been red.

“The second entry was on Fabinho. It is true that Sanchez first touches the ball, but the enthusiasm with which he throws himself is such as to leave no doubt about the decision of the Spanish referee Lahoz.

“Pity. Because from then on (with the recovery there was more than half an hour to go), in numerical parity, a whole other game would have started and last night's Inter would have, at least, reached extra-time and cherished an undertaking deemed impossible by all.

“Now, it is true that Liverpool hit three sensational posts (two before Sanchez's expulsion) and were miraculously stopped a couple of times by Skriniar and once, now in recovery, by Vidal on Luis Diaz, but football, sometimes, it offers unimaginable opportunities.

“And the lead at Anfield (0-1) was one of them. It would have taken less impetuousness and, perhaps, yet another pinch of luck (Simone Inzaghi was about to replace Sanchez with Correa).

“Eleven against 11 the game would have been open and, who knows, maybe it would have had a sensational outcome.

“It remains a beautiful victory for an unfinished business.

"In the calculation of the two games, for me, Inter was not inferior to Liverpool. On the contrary, in the first half at San Siro, he played better and must regret not having scored."

“Liverpool break through, but that's not enough.

“Lautaro Martinez's 1-0 with a masterpiece goal is not enough to overturn the Reds' 2-0 at San Siro.

“Simone Inzaghi’s Inter Champions League adventure ends in the round of 16.

“A game played by champions that of the Nerazzurri, who hold a blow also aided by luck, three posts hit by the opponents with Handanovic beaten.

“But in the highlight of the match immediately after the 1-0 there are 10 left for the red in Alexis Sanchez and see it go out the hope of playing it evenly until the end.”
