More than 33,000 thefts took place in Dublin area in the first nine months of 2022 - a staggering 38 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.
While this was the most dramatic increase in the latest crime figures released by the CSO, most other categories also increased in comparison to 2021.
There were nearly 7,500 attempts and/or threats to murder, assaults, harassments and related offences in Dublin alone during the first nine months. The number of homicides and related offences in the capital during that time period was 21.

There were more than 1,000 recorded sexual offences in the capital, with the national number being nearly 3,600. Nearly 10,000 Irish homes were invaded by burglars, with 4,189 of those cases being in the Dublin region. Gardai have issued a number of crime prevention tips to householders to help keep their homes safe during winter when “burglaries traditionally tend to rise”.
“Whether you are at home or going out, remember to turn on some lights, use timer switches, lock all doors and windows, use an alarm, store keys away from windows and letter boxes,” gardaí recommend. “And don’t keep large amounts of cash or jewellery in the house.”
A number of other offences were also report in the CSO report. There were almost 1,200 weapons and explosives offences in Dublin and 6,645 controlled drug offences. The vast majority of robberies, extortion and hijacking cases (1,185) also happened in the capital, and Dublin gardaí recorded 66 kidnapping and related offences.
The capital also took the top spot in number of public offences in the country (11,100), damages to property and the environment (8,833), offences against the government (6,756) and fraud and deception (5,655).
