The young guns we could see in Swansea City's squad soon including ex-Celtic and Man City starlets

Swansea City are clearly bidding for a strong finish to their first season under Russell Martin, a campaign that has carried all the hallmarks of a transitional campaign.

The Swans are, barring a disastrous nosedive in form, probably safe from the drop, while the play-offs are looking just as unlikely.

There is still plenty of reason to keep the collective foot on the gas, mind, as this squad continues to try and fully get to grips with Martin's high-octane methods. There's also the small matter of a potentially historic south Wales derby double too.

But there's little doubt that the Swans are already glancing an eye towards the future.

Plans for the upcoming transfer market are already likely being drafted up, and there are also a number of potential homegrown stars that may well be hoping to put their hands up ahead of next term.

The next few weeks could present Martin with the ideal opportunity to blood in some of the club's most promising young talents.

Here's a quick look at some of the names we could be seeing a lot more of over the coming weeks...

Cameron Congreve

The attacking midfielder, who can also play at left-back, recently made his first-team debut off the bench in the 1-0 defeat at Blackpool, having previously been named as an unused substitute in the games with Coventry City and Fulham.

Congreve has been with the club since under-nine level, and only broke into the club's under-23s last season, announcing himself in a 5-1 hammering of south Wales rivals Cardiff.

This term, the 18-year-old has been training with the first team on a number of occasions, and the arrival of a first professional contract this week shows just how highly he's rated by club insiders.

Martin himself said when quizzed on the teenager: “Cameron has been outstanding for the under-23s, which is what made us really interested in seeing how he would be in the first team set-up.

“He has come along and he has shown no trepidation, he has been himself and he has shown a lot of technical ability.

“He is very young, he has a lot to work on but he has unbelievable quality around the box with both feet, and with how deep they were defending I thought he might be able to do something, and with his first action he nearly did."

Azeem Abdulai

The former Celtic starlet joined from Leicester City over the summer, and has also been training with the first team on several occasions this term.

As well as being a regular at under-23 level, he's been included in three senior matchday squads.

The 19-year-old can play in a number of positions, including centre-back or at right-back.

He's also been known to play in the middle of midfield, often in a deeper role, and is already showing himself to be a confidence presence within Kris O'Leary's squad.

His confidence on the ball means he could be suited to Martin's brand of possession-based football, but he's yet to make his first-team bow.

That could all change soon.

Nathanael Ogbeta

All the signs point to the full-back being a big part of Martin's long-term plans.

Ogbeta arrived on deadline day from Shrewsbury Town in the recent January window, but has had to bide his time for a debut due to injury.

The former Man City starlet, who primarily plays as a left-back or left wingback, finally got his first taste of action since his move to south Wales by coming off the bench at Bloomfield Road, and clearly impressed his boss.

“Nat was brought in to give us something different and he has had to be patient because he got injured, so I am really pleased for him that he is out there, he is loving it and living it."

And despite his time in the treatment room, the 20-year-old appears to be settling in well to life in SA1.

"But he's fitted in brilliantly with the lads," Martin said recently. "They had a meal together the other night and he jumped on the piano and guitar, which they were all shocked by.

"He's a gifted boy, and intelligent boy, and I think he's fitted in nicely with his personality. Like any footballer he's desperate to show what he can do on the pitch.

"We're excited to have him on the pitch. He offers us something that we don't have."

Tivonge Rushesha

The 19-year-old has consistently been one of the brighter performers for the under-23s this season, and was recently appointed as captain.

Rushesha actually appeared for the first team a couple of years ago, coming off the bench during the League Cup win over Cambridge United, but saw his progress stifled last season due to a cruciate ligament injury.

He's bounced back in fine style, though, producing a series of accomplished performances at under-23s level, and is probably one of the first names on the team sheet having made the right-back slot his own once more.

One feels he can't be too far away from being around the first team picture once more.

Lincoln McFayden

Another to make a recent first-team outing off the bench, the left-back enjoyed a brief cameo against Reading in the League Cup back in October.

Having only arrived from Preston last summer, he's clearly making a big impression, and put pen to paper on a contract extension that will keep him with the Swans until 2024.

He's been regularly training with the senior squad, an experience he's clearly relishing as he bids to further his development.

“It’s great to be involved with the first team, you learn so much in a short space of time," he said.

“I’m watching how Jake Bidwell and Ethan Laird play and it gives me the chance to learn how they play in the wing-back position. It just shows you the different runs they make and different things that I can bring into my game which is a big help.”

Both Laird and Bidwell have since moved on, of course, but there's clearly a feeling that there's plenty more to come.
