The woman who's been cleaning Swansea's Quadrant Centre for nearly four decades

No matter how many shops have come and gone, the precinct has remained spotless.

The floors are polished, no corner goes unforgotten.

That's not an easy task with up to 100,000 visitors a week to Swansea 's Quadrant Centre.

The shopping venue opened in 1979, and a few years later Mary Morgan started working there.

“I saw the advert for this job and it excited me," said the grandmother-of-four.

"The Quadrant hadn’t long opened, and it was close to my house in Sandfields - it was perfect".

Almost four decades later, she is finally hanging up her uniform.

Mary began her working life as a sewing machinist in Northgate in Fforestfach.

She meet future husband Gary on a night out at the Top Rank on the Kingsway, and gave up working for a period to raise the couple's two children.

But when Gary was made redundant, Mary looked to get back in the workforce.

“I also remember when I first started, and we had just one dustpan and brush between three cleaners.

"I’m glad that changed when we were given trollies instead.

"There have been a lot changes over the years - I was sorry to see Debenhams go.

"And I've seen a lot of faces come and go too. There have been youngsters sniffing glue who have grown up and moved on. It's good to stop and talk to the old faces you know".

It wasn't in the job description, but Mary has also been sent on undercover missions.

On one occasion, Debenhams had made new recruits to their security team, and bosses wanted to test their mettle.

"I was sent in to shoplift to see how good they were," said Mary.

"I had to wear a big coat and went in and walked around. I eventually picked something up and slipped it inside my coat.

"Shortly after, a female security guard started following me. She put her hand on my shoulder and took me with her to the lodge.

"We explained what was going on, but at least she managed to do her job!"

More recently, Mary helped prevent would could have been a heart-breaking 21st birthday.

"Just a couple of months ago, I found £1,000 in an envelope that had been dropped on the floor. I couldn’t believe it.

"Luckily, the customer returned to collect it from our lost property, as it was a gift for his daughter’s 21st birthday. What a gift.

“I’ve also loved speaking to our customers that would come in here daily and sit on our benches. We’re all company for them and they’ve become friends by now. I’ve even had chocolates bought for me by customers.

“I’ve worked here for 38 years. I started in 1984 and it’s hard to believe that my last day will be Friday, February 4.

“I remember my first day like it was yesterday. I had an interview one day and started work here the next. It was as simple as that.

“I can’t believe I got the job and have stayed here for nearly 40 happy years.

“I have lots of very fond memories here. I have friends for life here. We all look out for each other.

"When I retire, I’ve told everyone that I’ll be returning to sit on a Quadrant bench, so I can still feel like I’m part of the family".

Matt Morris, Quadrant services supervisor, said: "Mary's husband will often drop her off and tell us, 'Ginger's here for the party'.

"She has always been lovely to work with. There will be a massive hole when she's gone".

And Quadrant Centre manager Lisa Hartley added: "The response online to the news of Mary’s retirement has been overwhelming and demonstrates how shoppers have appreciated her friendly demeanour and her hard work over the years. I’m very sad to see her go but she really deserves her retirement”.
