The wizard of Wishaw defeated world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan in epic clash at Masters

John Higgins defeated Ronnie O'Sullivan 6-3 in a scintillating Masters quarter-final featuring a record-equalling five consecutive centuries.

Higgins' started the unbelievable run of scoring with a brilliant break of 145 which is the highest of the tournament so far.

The record is shared with another Scotsman Stephen Maguire who achieved it in his match against Neil Robertson in 2009.

It was the 70th competitive clash between two of snooker's legendary players and the wizard of Wishaw really enjoyed renewing the friendly rivalry.

Higgins said:"I'm delighted with the way I played and turned up in a big game against one of the best players. I'm feeling sharp and it was a great win. It was a really high standard and only a couple of mistakes were made, it could have gone either way.

"I'm only in the semi final and I've got a massive game against Dave who I played in the semis of the World {Championships}. It was an unbelievable match, he seems to be enjoying this tournament and he's a big game player. "

Higgins preparation for the tournament was meticulous as he travelled down earlier than normal. The 45 year-old also recently switched to a new cue and the decision is paying dividends with Higgins finding some of his best form in years.

The two -time champion said:"It was massive for me to get some practice in before the tournament. I'm trying to tinker with my technique and trying to get closer to the cue ball.

"People were telling me that I was too far away before and that seems to helping me. It's been good. I've been putting some practice and I feel my form is close to being there even if I've lost some matches.

"There are so many good players and it's just about believing that you're good enough to compete with the best players. That performance should give me confidence."

"The cue is helping me and I'm just thinking of a trigger for every shot rather than winning matches."
