The wet lettuce that lasted longer than Liz Truss as Prime Minister

There were scenes of jubilation at the offices of lettuce HQ this lunchtime after it was confirmed that one of its members OUTLASTED Liz Truss as Prime Minister.

The Daily Star has livestreamed the HQ since October 14 to see if the illustrious lettuce bought from Tesco — which are not usually known for their staying power — could survive longer than Liz Truss’ premiership.

It did.

Throughout the afternoon, pounding dance music could be heard from the site of lettuce HQ — with a Greggs sausage roll and rose prosecco the tipple of choice for the lettuce and its supporters. The Manchester Evening News has had no official word from the lettuce on its victory.

A statement is due from the lettuce at a time to be confirmed this afternoon, it’s understood. More than 13,000 people tuned in to join in the celebrations on YouTube .

It’s not yet known if the lettuce will make another serious run in the UK’s ever-changing political landscape. However, supporters have been buoyed by its victory.

“Never doubted the Lettuce,” Alek Jeg said. Azwin Tariq added: “I’m so proud of this lettuce.”

“Not even my country but I’m celebrating,” Evan Schultz commented. Gonko joked: “Lettuce is the real fighter!” And one user, called Tom, said: “I welcome our new lettuce overlord!”

Later on in the afternoon, the lettuce was joined by key political allies — a carrot, a lemon, and an apple. Gin was also being slurped by the motley crew.

Announcing her resignation outside No 10, Ms Truss said: “I came into office at a time of great economical and international instability. Families and businesses were worried about how to pay their bills.

"Putin's illegal war in Ukraine threatens the whole security of our continent and our country has been held back too long on economic growth. I was elected to change this.

"We delivered on energy bills and cutting national insurance, we set out our vision for low tax and a huge growth economy. I recognise though given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party.

"I have spoken to the King to notify him I am resigning. I met the chair of the 1922 committee and we agreed a leadership election will be completed in the next week to deliver our country's economic stability. I will remain as PM until my successor has been chosen."

The Manchester Evening News has contacted the lettuce for comment.
