Alan Shearer has insisted that Newcastle United's summer recruits must come both ready and prepared to kick on following the sides strong end to the 21/22 campaign. Eddie Howe's team performed valiantly in the second half of the season, clawing themselves away from any lingering relegation woes to eventually finish in 11th position.
Matt Targett and Nick Pope have since joined the club thus far, with Sven Botman and potentially Hugo Ekitike both also tipped to put pen to paper in the North East too. Speaking ahead of the annual Sir Bobby Robson Celebrity Classic Golf Tournament, Shearer was impressed with the business his former side has completed so far.
"Hopefully there is one or two more than can come in but they've got to try and come in and carry on the good work from last season," began the 51-year-old. "They might have made it more difficult for themselves because of what they did and the expectations now and also with the money that Newcastle have spent and continue to spend to make them bigger and to improve.

"I'm looking forward to watching Newcastle to improve again and it was brilliant the atmosphere at St James' Park the last few months of the season, it was like it was many years ago when I was playing and it's amazing to see the city buzzing again and talking about football, that's the way it should be and long may it continue."
