As 2022 draws to a close it's time to consider who has been the best Welsh rugby player in what has been a bitterly disappointing calendar year for the men's national team.

Steffan Thomas' choice - Louis Rees-Zammit
It's been a disastrous year for Wales, one which ended in Wayne Pivac losing his job as head coach.
But despite the collective failures of the team, a few players did pull through with their reputations intact. Nobody shone more brightly than Louis Rees-Zammit.
The 21-year-old is pure box office and is one of only two Welsh players, the other being Taulupe Faletau, who would be serious contenders for a World XV.
The Gloucester wing is one of the deadliest finishers in world rugby and has been terrorising defences at both club and test level all year, but Rees-Zammit is more than just a speed merchant and has an all-round game to rival any wing in the world.
He also showed impressive maturity for such a young player bouncing back from getting dropped for the Six Nations test against England to regain his place in the side a fortnight later.
Expect him to get even better under the tutelage of Warren Gatland.
Ben James' choice - Jac Morgan
2022 isn't a year anyone in Welsh rugby will look back on fondly, with all facets of the game struggling from the national team downwards.
As the year ended in Wales winning just three of their 12 matches, costing Wayne Pivac his job, choosing the player of the year doesn't come easy. Taulupe Faletau was superlative as ever, while Tommy Reffell shone in South Africa.
But perhaps the honour belongs to Jac Morgan. Brought into the starting side for his debut in Wales' only Six Nations victory this year, against Scotland, he also helped turn the game in Wales' favour late on at Twickenham - albeit in a losing cause - by challenging England at the breakdown after coming off the bench.
Overlooked for the tour of South Africa for not being big enough, he responded as well as anyone could - coming off the bench to shine against Argentina in Wales' third and final victory of the season, before crossing for braces against Georgia and Australia.
With three starts and three appearances off the bench, you can't help but feel Morgan was underutilised in 2022 - but when he was called upon, he looked every part the Test player.
