Meta Platforms (META) has started rolling out its verification service and people on a rival platform are asking just one question.
Why?
DON'T MISS: Elon Musk Has Thoughts on Meta's New Paid Subscription Model
For just $11.99 per month on a desktop and $14.99 per month on the mobile app, Meta Verified will offer users a blue badge, extra impersonation protection against fraudulent accounts, and direct access to customer support.
"This new feature is about increasing authenticity and security across our services," CEO Mark Zuckerberg said. But it's unclear whether the masses will be buying what he's selling.
Some people are still waiting for Verified to go live in the locations it was promised.
Others saw this development as yet another sign of the apocalypse.
But some people are excited by the new era of paid social media.
Other's pointed out how expensive the service can get if you have accounts across Meta Platforms.
Meta, formerly known as Facebook, is notorious for copying the initiatives of its competitors (think Reels as a response to TikTok and Stories as a response to Snapchat) and this new verification push comes just months after Twitter (TWTR) did the same thing.
In the meantime, Twitter Blue has around 180,000 subscribers as of mid-January, according to The Information. That means that roughly 0.2% of its active users have subscribed to the service -- which doesn't really bode well for the future of social media subscriptions.
