The vital puzzle Eddie Howe has unlocked just at the right time for Newcastle United

Newcastle United signed Joe Willock on the back of a sparkling run of seven goals in seven matches in what proved to be an expensive run of form.

The late season goal rush ended up cranking his fee up to £25million and while Newcastle under Mike Ashley and Steve Bruce were always going to try to sign Willock from Arsenal, they never expected to pay through the nose for the midfielder.

After Willock signed it was accepted within the fanbase and around the club that the popular Londoner would struggle to recapture Alan Shearer-esque form so quickly.

But few would have predicted it would have taken him 21 matches to get off the mark in his permanent spell on Tyneside.

Like London buses though you wait around for one then two come along at once!

Willock's first successful spell at the club unfolded when he was eventually given freedom by Bruce to get forward from the engine room.

Yet people forget that it wasn't always easy for him, and he was actually dropped at one stage - with some of the seventh heaven form including goals from the bench. People also forget that Willock is just 22 and is still a good five or six years of his peak years.

Under Eddie Howe it has always been assumed that the goals would flow again, a "when not if" situation for Willock and the United backroom team.

Howe was delighted with his midfielder yesterday and said: "They need to score and we've said we need goals from around the team. Joe's general performances have improved steadily. His two goals in the last two games back that up."

Willock hit form at just the right time last season and his haul pretty much pulled Newcastle away from the danger zone.

And now with 13 matches to go and four wins needed to all but assure the club of top-flight safety Howe could do with a few more.

At Brentford, he never looked like not scoring after timing his run to perfection and latching on to Fabian Schar's pass before clipping it over the keeper. It was a move and goal that sealed the victory as early as the 44th minute as the Bees were never going to find three goals with 10 men.

Willock actually threatened to add to his own personal tally but settled for a single.

He now takes that confidence into the home clash with Brighton & Hove Albion and the incentives are now appearing from every corner for the midfielder. Just like victory was a bit of a must against Brentford, given the tough fixture list on the horizon, the weekend clash with Brighton also fits into that category.

Win that and Newcastle will have 28 points in the bag with 12 matches left and they would then head into that trio of away fixtures at Southampton, Chelsea and Everton with the pressure eased ever so slightly.

For all that the way United are knocking the ball around and creating chances - they made 26 at Brentford - you'd fancy them to get something from a couple of those games at St Mary's and Goodison Park.

As for Stamford Bridge? Well, you never know, Chelsea have had the League Cup final then face the FA Cup tie with Luton before a trip to Lille.

It's a busy time for the Blues as well and Newcastle will be slightly fresher. Whoever Newcastle play Willock and co will be rubbing their hands after rediscovering that winning feeling again.

Great isn't it?
