One thing about me? I’ll never miss some low-stakes TikTok drama. This week, the silliest yet most entertaining beef unfolding on my FYP involves a burrito lover, a whole-avocado hater and a little (delicious) Mexican chain called Guzman y Gomez.
It all kicked off when a TikToker named Zara (@zarastav) shared a video of a burrito she ordered with extra guacamole. However, she claims that when she received the burrito, she was given half an avocado rather than proper guac.
Taking to TikTok, Zara shared her disappointing experience.
“This ruined my night, thank you,” she captioned the video.
“GYG Australia, please explain,” she said in the video of the burrito.
“I’m actually dead. What the hell? This is a TikTok moment.”
Personally, if I received half an avo in a burrito, I’d be stoked. I mean, half a Hass avocado in this economy? Please, that’s a fkn deal. But I am an avocado enthusiast with an avocado-turkey leg hybrid tattooed on my arm, so I get that not everyone feels as strongly as me.
In the comments, people were pretty suss on Zara’s account of events, with some claiming that the burrito appeared to be half eaten.
“You made that yourself,” commented a naysayer.
“Girl, we all know you put it there,” said another.
Another TikToker, Lexi Mary (@Lexiimary), felt so invested in the drama that she even made a video about it.
But Zara wasn’t taking this slander against her avocado trauma, clapping back in the comments of Lexi’s video, and her own, to defend her claims.

After tagging the burrito bros in the videos, it was no surprise that the official GYG jumped into the comments to defend their store’s actions. However, things took a juicy turn when GYG claimed that their original comment was deleted and subtly threw shade at Zara’s quac-tastic claims.
“Who deleted our original comment?” they wrote.
“The no bite in the avo is wild! But our crew are always here to help, read out via our website and we can get it sorted.”

In a statement to news.com.au, Guzman Y Gomez has stated that it is “extremely unlikely” that a half avocado would be put into a burrito. They claimed that it could happen because the avos are smashed “by hand every day” to make the guac.
“Half an avocado would have to pass through a number of checks prior to getting into a burrito, so this is very unlikely,” the statement read.
“We always encourage guests to contact us directly as we are able to review the product being made and ensure that procedures were followed. There are several inconsistencies in the product that we would also be inclined to check before validating the video.”
While there are plenty of people who don’t believe Zara’s account, others claim that the same thing has happened to them.
Meanwhile, others who claimed to be ex-employees of the franchise said that the big chunks of green deliciousness were due to the avos being hard to mash.
“GYG worker/survivor here. I lowkey hate this place so idk why I’m defending BUT because avos are out of season all our avos are coming in extremely under rip and it’s super difficult to mash the guac,” wrote one commenter.
This was echoed by another person who claimed to be a GYG worker who stated that “sometimes even our strongest employees can’t mash” the avocados.

Ultimately, I think GYG and Zara will have to agree to disagree over the validity of her avocado argument. Either way, I hope Zara was gifted another burrito. Whether that be a freebie for the avo incident or her efforts in pulling off one of the best TikTok hoaxes of all time.
