The unseen work to get 'gifted boy' Ogbeta up to speed as Swansea City offer support to Wolf following tragedy

Russell Martin says Swansea City's backroom team are already working hard to bring injured deadline-day signing Nathanael Ogbeta up to speed, as the youngster steps up his bid for first-team contention over the coming days.

The 20-year-old hasn't yet made a senior appearance for the Swans due to a hamstring injury, but is nevertheless settling in well within the the group, with Martin clearly keen to see what the youngster can bring to the table during the second half of the season.

Indeed, Martin is hopeful that the former Manchester City starlet will be back in full training soon.

"He will be back on the grass next week, which is brilliant," he said.

"Then we just need to take our time and make sure he is fully fit. We want to ensure everything is fine for him to really kick on, and get as many games as possible before the end of the season."

It's been a frustrating start to life in south Wales, but Ogbeta himself is understood to be relishing the challenge of impressing his new boss, and has clearly had little problem settling in with his new team-mates, having even dazzled them with his musical abilities behind the scenes.

"We could have probably had him back by now if we really wanted to rush it," Martin added. "But it's totally pointless to rush him back on the pitch and then for him to break down again. It's a different intensity, a different level of football and I think he's prepared for that.

"But he's fitted in brilliantly with the lads. They had a meal together the other night and he jumped on the piano and guitar, which they were all shocked by.

"He's a gifted boy, and intelligent boy, and I think he's fitted in nicely with his personality. Like any footballer he's desperate to show what he can do on the pitch.

"We're excited to have him on the pitch. He offers us something that we don't have."

Martin admits that the youngster's efforts to bed in in SA1 are unlikely to really take off until he's back on the grass, but says the club's backroom team have already been working flat out with the youngster to ensure he stands the best possible chance of meeting Martin's expectations.

"He's in every meeting that's specific to him," he said. "He's going through individual analysis for the man who is playing in his position at the moment.

"So he understands what we want with all the video work. He's been on the side of training for certain bits, so he gets what we're trying to do."

Elsewhere, Hannes Wolf is expected to be in contention for Monday's clash with West Bromwich Albion following his recovery from a hamstring injury - and despite the tragic developments involving one of his team-mates at parent clubs Borussia Mönchengladbach.

News emerged this week that under-23s star Jordi Bongard had been killed in a car accident on Thursday morning, and Martin has already offered his support to the Austrian.

Wolf was a personal friend of the centre-back, and may yet be granted compassionate leave, but as things stand is currently doing his best to focus on the trip to the Baggies.

"We spoke about it yesterday and today," Martin continued.

"He's a friend of Hannes, a very similar age to him.

"It's difficult, but we've just got to support him. We just said that to him today. Whatever he needs, we will be there for him.

"It's a really, really tough time. He trained today because he chose to. He wanted to. Just to distract himself.

"It's difficult, so whatever way he needs to process it, we'll support him. That's all you can do I think.

"I went through it at Wycombe years and years ago. One of my best friends died in a car crash. He was a team-mate of mine.

"It's different for everyone, but I understand a bit of what he's going through.

"All the players have told him that they're there for him.

"I think he wants to go back there for the funeral, of course, and maybe spend a couple of days out there to see some of his team-mates and be around people that knew him and shared that connection.

"I don't know when that's going to be yet, and neither does he.

"We're just waiting to find out the details, but he wants to stay, and wants to play football. He thinks that's the best way for him to try and get through it.

"If he changes his mind, well, there's things that are way more important than football."

Meanwhile, Kyle Naughton could also be in line for a return to the starting line-up, after picking up a thigh problem against Luton Town.

“Kyle is back and everyone is really happy to have him back,” Martin said.

"He has had a full week of training and he has looked great. He has been a big loss and a big miss for us.

“The calmness he shows, the technical ability that he has got, is a big boost for us and everyone is very happy to see him back.”
