The true story behind The Girl in The Picture on Netflix

Since the release of The Girl in The Picture on Netflix last week, it has proven to be another hit with viewers. The newest documentary to land on the streaming service was quick to hit the number one spot for most popular films on the streaming service.

The Netflix description of The Girl in The Picture reads: “A young mother’s mysterious death and her son’s subsequent kidnapping blow open a decades-long mystery about the woman’s true identity and the murderous federal fugitive at the centre of it all.”

The official trailer of The Girl in The Picture gives viewers further anticipation of the chills they can expect from the film. Netflix true crime fans may recognise the director Skye Borgman, as he also made the equally chilling documentary Abducted in Plain Sight.

The true story behind The Girl in The Picture on Netflix

Netflix has grown a reputation for tracking down unusual and fascinating true crime stories and The Girl in The Picture is indeed one of these. This true story follows the mysterious case of Suzanne Marie Sevakis, who used the name Sharon Marshall, who was found dying by the side of a road in 1990.

Suzanne's photo as a young girl with her father was of particular interest to the documentary maker who delved into the tragic story of what happened to her. Suzanne lived with her father, Franklin Floyd, who was a known fugitive with worrying behaviour.

Born on September 9 1969, Suzanne was one of four children born to her mother Sandi Chipman. The Girl in The Picture reveals the horrifying truth of Suzanne being abducted as a child by her stepfather Franklin Delano Floyd.

He pretended to raise her as his child after her mother was sent to prison, and then once she became an adult, he married her. The lies and deceit of Franklin finally begin to unravel when an FBI Agent starts to look into a suspicious life insurance claim.

The Girl in The Picture examines Suzanne's case and the circumstances around her death and who was responsible for it. The Girl in The Picture has had viewers discussing online the peculiar case of Sharon Marshall since the documentary started streaming earlier this month.

On Twitter, @itzzzmeeeZ tweeted: “The girl in the picture on Netflix 10/10”. @juliakolens wrote: “The girl in the picture is the craziest story ever. I have seen so many true crime documentaries and videos but this one kept surprising me every damn minute. Such a sad case.”

Also sharing thoughts on the true-crime documentary, @nowhineme wrote: “‘Girl in the Picture’ just wow. Wow! Hell is definitely empty and earth is lurking with demons!” Seemingly shocked, @dejgoat2 typed: “nah that documentary girl in the picture is crazy”. The Girl in The Picture is now available to watch on Netflix for subscribers of the streaming platform.
