Fans of the Los Angeles Lakers appreciate the franchise’s rich and storied tradition, and the HBO series “Winning Time” has given them an opportunity to re-experience or discover the team’s greatest era.
The show’s first season portrayed the 1979-80 campaign, which was the watershed campaign for the Lakers and one that started to define them as the gold standard of basketball. It was the first year for Hall of Famer Magic Johnson and late owner Dr. Jerry Buss, as well as coach Pat Riley, who was an assistant under Paul Westhead at the time.
Despite internal issues, the season ended with the franchise’s second world championship since moving to Los Angeles in 1960.
Even though a number of former Lakers have frowned upon the series, many fans loved Season 1. Season 2 will premiere on Aug. 6, and a trailer has been released.

The upcoming season will reportedly cover more than one season and stretch into the mid-1980s when the Lakers started playing the Boston Celtics for the NBA title.
