The toys that parents believe are most likely to stand the test of time

New research has revealed the 10 toys that parents believe are most likely to stand the test of time

At the top of the list was Lego, board games and puzzles, while Barbies and the Rubik’s Cube were also believed to be among the most timeless. The research comes ahead of a Christmas in which parents say they plan to reduce spending due to the cost of living crisis - but not on kid’s presents.

Many parents are also opting to get their children money or a memorable experience for Christmas rather than more toys or "tat".

Gumtree found that nearly nine in 10 parents feel under pressure to deliver gifts their children will be pleased with this year. But more than half of children aged between six and 12 years old who were surveyed said they would not mind if a gift was second-hand.

Here are the top 10 gifts that will stand the test of time, according to parents surveyed for Gumtree, with the percentages of parents who voted for them:

1. Lego (56 percent)

2. Board games (47 percent)

3. Puzzles and jigsaws (34 percent)

=4. Bike (33 percent)

=4. Football (33 percent)

6. Cuddly toy/teddy (30 percent)

7. Barbie doll (25 percent)

8. Doll’s house (24 percent)

9. Rubik’s Cube (21 percent)

10. Toy kitchen (20 percent)

Hannah Rouch, chief marketing officer at Gumtree, which has a Toybox section on its website with second-hand gifts, said: "Toys and games hold such precious memories for children."
