"I went to Lidl and bought the same shopping I bought four months ago, this is how much more it cost me"

Lidl food shop (Manchester Family / MEN)

We've heard so much about price hikes recently and families struggling to make ends meet.

While many people would admit to feeling the pinch, it's not always that easy to pinpoint exactly where that extra money is going.

With parents on our Manchester Family Facebook page telling us their shopping bills are shooting up, we decided to put one supermarket to the test.

Armed with a receipt for a shopping trip to Lidl in June, we went along to buy the same products to see exactly which ones had risen in price.

Out of 16 items in the trolley, a staggering three quarters of them cost more - only tinned tomatoes, malt wheaties cereal, cheddar cheese and a Warburtons Toastie loaf remained the same.

And while some increased by just a few pence - including carrots and chocolate digestives up by three pence each - others had seen far bigger increases.

'Worst lurgy ever' spreading across region as people complain of horrible symptoms lasting weeks

People are complaining of the 'worst lurgy ever' (PA)

A horrible and hard to rid cold is currently spreading across the north west.

The illness, which has been described as the 'worst lurgy ever' is leaving people with a sandpaper throat, chesty cough and runny nose that's reportedly tough to shift.

It has been expected for some time that this winter would see an increase in colds and flu due to the fact that people are socialising largely without any restrictions for the first time since March, 2020.

One woman says she has been 'totally floored' for weeks - and more and more are saying they have been ill, or know someone who is under the weather, the Liverpool Echo reports.

Dr Philippa Kaye, a GP based in London, said that it's not just the north west - numbers have already been as high as you'd see in a normal winter.

She told the BBC: "We've actually been seeing a rise in the number of coughs and colds and viral infections.

"We are mixing in a way that we haven't been mixing over the past 18 months.

"During those first lockdowns, we saw numbers of other [non-Covid] infections fall. We think that that was primarily due to the restrictions on meeting up."

Drinker posts odd complaint after 'traditional' Manchester pub crawl - and it's left people fuming

The Briton's Protection pub (MEN)

If you're out drinking in Manchester city centre on a Friday night, there might be a few things to moan about.

Queuing for the bar or the choice of music perhaps.

But one drinker took to social media to make a bizarre complaint following a 'traditional' Manchester pub crawl.

And it's left people fuming.

"Been into three "traditional" pubs in Manchester today and on two occasions the barman have had painted nails," the drinker posted.

"Not what I was expecting."

It is understood the man had been referring to drinking institutions, the Briton's Protection and the Peveril of the Peak on Great Bridgewater Street.

The post wasn't received well, with many social media users questioning the drinker about why it mattered.
