The NCT is becoming a stress for motorists as it is nearly impossible to get a date and even once you do, your car may still fail for a number of reasons.
CarTakeBack have said that the number one reason most cars fail the NCT is due to tyres not being up to scratch. The average pass rate of all centres across the country is 54.29 per cent. 14 test centres had pass rates of below 50 per cent. In 2022, 6.23 per cent of all cars tested nationwide were deemed unsafe to drive according to data by Applus.
Although the NCT may have been under scrutiny lately, the likelihood of a car passing is mainly the responsibility of the driver. Applus said that the test is not a diagnostic of the condition of the vehicle and “the owner is responsible to ensure the vehicle is maintained in a roadworthy condition at all times when in use in a public place”.
They added that ensuring your car is the correct tyre thread depth is essential for your car to pass.
