Today we start the countdown to our list of the Top 200 businesses in Leicestershire.
As in previous years the list has been put together by a team at De Montfort University to show the scale and ambition of the biggest employers in Leicester and Leicestershire.
The list has taken months to pull together and over the next few days BusinessLive will be counting down to a Top 200 breakfast event at Winstanley House hotel in Leicester on Tuesday.
There the Top 20 biggest companies will be revealed prior to the last part of the list going live on our website. The list this year is sponsored by Pattersons Commercial Law.
This list is not intended to be a comprehensive table of where the Top 200 companies are today.
Because of the time it takes to post company accounts – and the huge gaps there can be between one company making their figures public and another company doing so – DMU has used a 12 month period that covers all the businesses on our list.
In this case that means using figures for the 2019/20 financial year, which go up to the spring of 2020. DMU said that doing so allows them to put together a like-for-like table.
As a result these figures won’t take into account the impact the pandemic has had on the turnover and profits of so many of our companies.
Many will have relied on furlough and Government support to keep going. Hospitality and leisure companies will have taken a huge hit, as will retailers who didn’t make up for lost store sales through online sales.
Many weathered the storm well, while others, following the initial first hit, worked their way through Covid-19 on a relatively even footing.
Because of the dates that the figures are taken from, many of the companies will have moved up or down the list in the intervening months – including some of those in the top 10.
The DMU data is based on information filed at Companies House.
The upshot is that some “true” Leicestershire companies won’t have made the Top 200 because, for instance, they will have used their accountants as their registered address – and often those accountants are based outside the county.
By the same token there are a number on the list based outside the county, but whose accountants are based here.
Because of that, and because some LLPs have also been left off, you won’t see big names such as Morningside Pharmaceuticals, Pick Everard, BHIB Insurance and Berkeley Insurance or big local employers such as Walkers crisps added - their formal head office is in Reading.
Also, growing companies such as business software specialist The Access Group have not been added despite a turnover of £500 million. Although they have a new £20 million HQ in Loughborough they are still registered elsewhere.
Some of the businesses on the list have their addresses in Warwickshire or Derbyshire, for instance, but that is more an issue of post codes, and they are “proper” Leicestershire companies.
So all-in-all this list is a good representation of who the biggest businesses in Leicester and Leicestershire are.
Many of the companies listed are international concerns, and between them contribute billions to the UK economy and support tens of thousands of workers.
